Este artículo trata sobre la fundación del monasterio de Santa María de Burgohondo y sobre las crónicas que se refieren a este momento, que habría tenido lugar a finales del siglo XI de la mano del rey Alfonso VI (1072-1109). Al margen de cualquier consideración particular, lo importante es que la reflexión sobre su origen contribuye a fortalecer las tesis de Ángel Barrios que, frente a Claudio Sánchez Albornoz, defiende la pervivencia, durante la dominación musulmana en la Península Ibérica, de poblaciones de origen visigodo, antiguos pastores y agricultores cristianos más o menos arabizados, mozárabes habitantes en la frontera, en las recónditas estribaciones de la Sierra de Gredos fundamentalmente en torno a las cabeceras del Tormes y del Alberche.
 
 
SUMMARY
 
This article discusses the founding of the monastery of Santa Maria in Burgohondo and the chronicles that refer this historic moment. It would have taken place at the end of the eleventh century by the hand of king Alfonso VI (1072-1109). Irrespective of any particular account, to argue about its origins helps to strengthen the arguments that Angel Barrios defends, against to the position of Claudio Sanchez Albornoz, about the survival, during the Muslim domination in the Iberian Peninsula, of populations of visigothic origin, christian herders and farmers, mozarabic population in the border, living in the remote foothills of Gredos, primarily around the headwaters of the river Tormes and the Alberche.
